Abstract

Motor unit potential (MUP) is a summated response of all single muscle fiber action potentials belonging to one motor unit. MUP characteristics including duration, amplitude, configuration, and recruitment on voluntary motor activity are studied as part of the clinical electromyography. Alteration in MUP morphology and recruitment pattern forms the basis for diagnostic interpretation of underlying disease process. Neurogenic changes are characterized by increased duration and amplitude of MUP and reduced recruitment pattern, whereas typical myopathic pattern consists of small amplitude, short duration, and polyphasic MUPs with early recruitment.
