Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper analyzes the responses of 173 entrepreneurs to motivational questions relating to their new-business creation and the responses of 398 non-entrepreneurs about their career choices. Key findings are that Canadian entrepreneurs are highly motivated by a need for independence and control of their destiny, and not by family tradition or the welfare of their ethnic group or local community. The desire for wealth ranks low in comparison to the need for personal development and the drive towards innovation. However, the relative importance of these motivations varies according to the type of business established.
