Abstract
Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1986, Vol 31(12), 992–993. Reviews the book, The Neurobiology of Motivation and Reward by James R. Stellar and Eliot Stellar (1985). This book is a well-written and, for the most part, easily understood exposition on the neurobiology of motivation and reward. Although over half of the book deals with the issues involved in rewarding electrical stimulation of the brain (ESB), in the first 82 pages, the authors concisely present historical context, theories of motivational behavior, and the role of the anatomy and physiology of the central nervous system (CNS) in modulating and responding to behavior. Throughout the book, the authors point out that the primary business of the brain is behavior. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
