Abstract
The retarding force due to Faraday–Lenz’s law on a conducting rod which is free to slide along a fixed conducting rail in a uniform magnetic field were discussed in great detail (Young and Geller (2006 College Physics (San Francisco CA: Addison-Wesley) p 708; Serway and Faughn (2003 College Physics (Pacific Grove, CA: Thomson Learning) p 631). In this work, we study the motion of two conducting rods which are free to slide along a fixed metal rail in a magnetic field using Faraday–Lenz’s law and show how the outcome is consistent with the law of conservation of linear momentum.
