Abstract
Memorializes Mortimer Mishkin (1926-2021). A systems neuroscientist, Mishkin's most well-known contributions involve sensory neocortical processing systems for vision, audition, and somatic sensation, and their relationship with the formation and storage of memory systems in the brain; specifically, his discoveries (a) that the visual system extended beyond the primary visual area, (b) that the visual system was divided into two-the ventral and dorsal-processing streams (with Leslie Ungerleider), and (c) of the role of the medial temporal lobe in memory. Mishkin was on two dozen journal editorial boards and committees and was fellow of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, National Academy of Medicine, American Psychological Association (APA), American Psychological Society (APS), and Society of Experimental Psychologists (SEP).
