Abstract

The main problems concerning mortars, grouts and plasters, as used in the field of conservation of works of art, are discussed. The fundamental requirements of a mortar for restoration are a low content of soluble salts, and mechanical, thermal and structural characteristics as similar as possible to those of the ancient masonries, which are usually composed of natural stones and bricks. In particular, the need for standard methods of analysis and quality control procedures is stressed, and some future developments in this field are defined.
