Abstract

A brief review of the various interpretations of the maxillae and labium is given. The interpretation of the cardo and postlabium as subcoxal segments is questioned because of insufficient evidence for the presence of such a segment in insects. The contention that the cardo and stipes represent the coxopodite and basipodite of the appendage is rejected as is also the presence of sternal elements in the postlabium. The maxillae of some immature Coleoptera are used in an attempt to trace the probable course of development of the adult maxilla and labium. The provisional conclusion reached is that the cardo and stipes and the postlabium and prementum are secondary subdivisions of the coxa.
