Abstract

Twenty-one phages of Listeria monocytogenes (including 15 typing phages) have isometric heads and long, non-contractile tails. They are differentiated by tail length and belong to three morphological types. Type I resembles certain viruses of coryneform bacteria. In addition to normal phages, some lysates contain abnormally long tails with or without empty heads or terminal spikes, small heads resembling proheads of phage lambda, and helical filaments.
