Abstract

The morphology evolution of iron-rich crystal in Cu melt has been investigated via Spherical-aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (Cs-corrected STEM). Morphology of iron-rich crystal was observed to transform from the stable sphere to petal-like unstable shape when the radius of the crystal increase to approximately 11nm, which is in a good agreement with Mullins-Sekerka's instability theory. This work opens a new insight to understand nano crystal growth at initial solidification stage.
