Abstract

Prior to an August 2017 election at a Nissan plant in Canton, Mississippi, which the union lost, Gov. Phil Bryant (R) posted a picture on Facebook of a rundown factory in Detroit with the caption: “I hope the employees at Nissan Canton understand what the UAW will do to your factory and town. Just ask Detroit. Vote no on the union.” Meanwhile, Sen. Bernie Sanders (D‐VT) spoke and rallied in support of workers in Canton. These are but two examples of the recent tendency of politicians to become involved in UAW organizing campaigns.
