Abstract

Astranger from a foreign country would be immediately struck by the fact that among the “Masterpieces of Art” to be shown at the New York World's Fair of 1940 about one picture in eight is the work of an American painter. He would conclude from this statistic that the exhibition was un-American. He would be wrong. For as we know from Mark Twain (not to mention the New Deal) there are three sort of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics. That most of the pictures shown are not of American production does not mean at all that the show is un-American.
