Abstract
What do an All State Chorus member, a seventh grade English award winner, two third place science fair recipients, three BETA Club members, and a school winner of the American Dream Week essay contest have in common? Twelve months ago, they were identified as potential dropouts. Their active participation in an especially designed program has yielded these impressive results: an overall cumulative grade point improvement from 1.17 to 2.12, and three schoolwide intramural championships, a feat previously not achieved at Meadowbrook Middle School in Orlando, Florida. Designed consistently with the current literature on successful programs for students academically at risk of dropping out of school (Levin, 1987), the program began the previous year with careful planning. Ninety seventh grade students were identified who possessed at least two of the following characteristics of potential dropouts: high absenteeism, excessive number of discipline referrals, two or more years older than their classmates, poor grades, low stanine scores on standardized tests, and parents who did not complete a high school education.
