Abstract
The potential benefits of Power-By-Wire (PBW) actuation and utility systems and the use of this technology in concert with Fly-By-Wire (FBW) or Fly-By-Light (FBL) have been discussed and well documented by many subsystem and aircraft manufacturers. This paper attempts to reveal the status and capability of past, present, and planned development by Lucas Aerospace of hardware aimed to support the overall More Electric Initiative. Lucas's extensive experience in Power-By-Wire includes design architectures of the Integrated Actuation Package (IAP), Electro-Mechanical Actuator (EMA) and Electrical Back-up Hydrostatic Actuator (EBHA). Included are technical descriptions of each architecture, including system schematics and design evolution. Also included is a detailed chronological listing of the extensive bench testing. Ground testing and flight test experience achieved during these development programs. Design advances brought about during the evolution of these three architectures are discussed along with descriptions of ongoing and future development and demonstration programs. >
