Abstract

WHILE CONGRESS is preparing legislation that would seriously cut funding for federal food assistance programs, a newly completed study shows that some 4 million children younger than 12 years in the United States go hungry during at least part of the year. Almost 10 million additional children in low-income families are at risk of hunger and its farreaching health and psychosocial consequences. findings of the 3-year, nationwide survey were released by the Food Research and Action Center, Washington, DC, a private, national not-for-profit organization dedicated to eliminating hunger and undernutrition in the United States. According to the center, its study, called the Community Childhood Hunger Identification Project, is the most rigorous and comprehensive investigation of childhood hunger in the United States carried out to date.
