Abstract

This paper presents the thoughts of the MoonMars Workshop (MMW) regarding Moon and Mars Enabling Technologies. The workshop, held in conjunction with the International Astronautical Congress 2003 in Bremen, was born from a recommendation of the Space Generation Summit, Houston 2002. The specific goal of the MMW combined youth and expert panel was to identify the many commonalities between the minimum technologies required for near-term human Moon and Mars exploration and settlement. By developing in parallel the technologies needed for both Moon and Mars exploration we accelerate the process, combine communities and maximise return on investment. The MoonMars participants examined existing literature by space agencies and other parties (such as the Lunar Exploration Society and the Mars Society) on the subject of technologies and concepts enabling long duration space travel and habitation.
