Abstract

Canada is a country known more for attacking its artists than celebrating them, so when it was announced some months back that a national wake would be held in honour of the life and career of the late George Ryga, suspicions were immediately raised from Summerland to St John’s. I mean, like, didn’t Ryga speak the truth in his plays? How dare he not be assigned to the traditional trash-heap of our collective artistic memory?
