Abstract

Coil dimensions of short chains terminally attached to a rigid, impenetrable boundary in poor solvent and/or low temperature conditions are studied by means of the Monte Carlo (MC) method. It is found that the system exhibits a characteristic temperature T c at which all the chain properties change dramatically. For a given chain length N, the coil dimension above T c decreases monotonically with decreasing temperature. Below T c rapid expansion of the chain in a direction orthogonal to the surface can be seen.
