Monocyte-macrophages increase in the bursal follicular medulla following bacterial intracloacal inoculation of Bordetella pertussis in chicks.

Abstract

SummaryMonocyte‐macrophage cell lineage (M‐pattern cells) is a conspicuous population found in the bursal follicular medulla. In chicks intracloacally inoculated with bacteria (Bordetella pertussis), it was possible to observe a statistically significant increase of the volume fraction occupied by M‐pattern cells in that follicular compartment. The functional importance of this phenomenon is discussed.ZusammenfassungZunahme der Monozyten/Makrophagen‐Population im Follikelmark der Bursa fabricii bei Hühnern nach intrakloakaler Applikation von BakterienZellen der Monozyten‐Makrophagen‐Linie (M‐charakteristische Zellen) sind eine auffällige Population, die in der follikulären Medulla der Bursa vorkommt. Bei Hühnern, die mit Bordetella pertussis intrakloakal inokuliert wurden, konnte eine statistisch signifikante Volumenzunahme der Region, die im follikulären Kompartiment von M‐charakteristischen Zellen besiedelt ist, nachgewiesen werden. Die funktionelle Bedeutung dieses Phänomens wird diskutiert.
