Abstract

The reduction or elimination of presbyopic symptoms in contact lens fitting, using the technique of monocular fogging, is reviewed. Tests used in clinical trials during the evaluation of monocular fogging are described and some judgements regarding their relative merits are made. The status of this clinical procedure is considered in relation to Its role in conventional eye care. That is, monocular fogging is contrasted with binocular balancing techniques, and other means used to promote binocular vision (which forms the basis of conventional eye care methods). Factors in binocular coordination which may be considered as sufficient condition to allow the successful application of the technique are discussed. Similarly the nature of binocular vision which appears to preclude the use of a monocular fogging technique is also outlined.
