This improved information makes the nation's modern industrial economy and advanced manufacturing practices possible. The testing and monitoring sector of the water industry is composed of fixed‐base analytical laboratory equipment, in‐line and field water quality monitoring systems, water meters and devices to measure water quantity, data collection and transmission systems, analytical software packages, and commercial water testing and analysis firms. Taken together, the monitoring and testing business represents a critical part of the water industry; annual revenues are estimated at around $2 billion in the United States alone. The article presents recent trends and developments in this field, along with a brief overview of the critical role played by monitoring and testing at various stages in the natural hydrologic cycle and within water treatment storage and distribution systems. The article wraps up with a statement on the outlook for the water quality monitoring and testing sector of the industry.
