Abstract

As it marked its seventieth anniversary, the Mongolian People's Republic in 1991 continued to undergo the political, economic, and social upheaval that began in 1990. The ruling Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (MPRP), thoroughly discredited by its past failures, lost authority; the nation sought to adopt a new constitution, a new name (Republic of Mongolia), and a new political, economic, and social system; and economic reform was accompanied by serious, though perhaps temporary economic decline that required massive infusions of foreign aid to forestall collapse.
