Money-Prospects of Cryptocurrencies- A Bibliometric Review

Abstract

The status of money-prospects of cryptocurrencies in conventional and shari’ah literature remains hotly debated and largely indecisive. We apply the bibliometric approach to review the literature on the money-prospects of cryptocurrencies. We select 264 articles published during 2011-2021 through systematic screening from WoS to explore the influential and intellectual aspects of literature. Bibliometric citation analysis is conducted to present influential research categories, leading authors, top articles, prominent countries, and major journals within sample selection. We also highlight a trend of annual scientific production to show sustained growth in the topic. Further, keyword analysis and bibliometric coupling analysis are applied to generate networks to highlight intellectual aspects of money-prospects of cryptocurrencies. We use networks of emerging themes and main clusters to conduct content analysis further. We include and review studies which discuss money-prospects of cryptocurrencies in light of shari’ah precepts in relevant cluster. We also identify cluster-wise potential future research areas. The study extend help to researchers in understanding evolution, dimensions, and emerging themes regarding money-prospects of cryptocurrencies.
