Abstract
The goal of molecular medicine is to understand diseases on the level of molecules using the new knowledge and the new techniques of cellular and molecular biology, molecular genetics and recombinant DNA technology. New insights into disease mechanisms gained by molecular rheumatology, molecular immunology and molecular autoimmunity have increased our knowledge tremendously. They have begun to influence areas of research and to effect changes in the practice of medicine. This development is exemplified by two examples each in the fields of diagnosis, pathogenesis and therapy of rheumatic diseases.
