Abstract

If tilted helicoidally modulated chiral polar smectic liquid crystals are doped by achiral bent-core molecules, a significant shortening of the pitch irrespective of the handedness of the host appears, even for a very low dopant concentrations. The phenomenon has the same origin as the shortening of the pitch found in cholesteric liquid crystals doped by achiral bent-core molecules.
