Abstract

β-cell apoptosis plays a key role in the onset of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The molecular mechanisms inducing apoptosis of β-cells in type 1 and type 2 diabetes are different. In type 1 diabetes, FasL, perforin and granzyme, interleukin-1β, tumor necrosis factor-α, interferon-γ, and NO is very important in the courses of β-cell apoptosis. However, the main mechanisms leading to β-cell apoptosis in type 2 diabetes are inflammation stress, oxidative stress and endoplasmic reticulum stress. Key words: Islet β-cell; Apoptosis; Molecular mechanism; Diabetes mellitus
