Abstract
Dimethyl sulphoxide(DMSO) is widely used in biology, chemistry and Pharmacy.Due to its ability to enhance the membrane permeability,DMSO is frequently applied to facilitate the transport of active molecules across the biological membranes. This mini-review presents the evidence of both the theoretical and experimental analyses for the mechanism of how DMSO increases membrane permeability, especially, molecular dynamics simulations and experimental evidence that predicts that DMSO induces transient water pores in biological membranes.
