Abstract

The most significant issue affecting balloon flower (Platycodon grandiflorus) in Vietnam’s mountainous provinces is stem and root rot disease. The purpose of this study was to identify the causal fungus Fusarium solani of balloon flower planted in Lao Cai province. F. solani’s identity was confirmed through DNA sequencing and phylogenetic analyses based on ITS sequences. PDA was the most suitable medium for F. solani growth and development of the three semi-solid media tested (CA, PDA, and CDA). The optimal temperature and pH conditions for its growth ranged from 25-30 °C with a maximum growth rate of 25 °C and pH 5.5-7.0 with a maximum growth rate of 6.5. This is the first report of F. solani causing balloon flower stem and root rot in Vietnam.
