Abstract
Using lactoperoxidase (peroxidase EC 1.11.1.7) iodination and reductive methylation, a topographic analysis was made of rat liver ribosomal proteins. The proteins could be ranked by their relative accessibilities to labelling. Proteins S6, S11, S26, L3 and L35 are apparently “buried”. Proteins S1, S16, L11, L12 and L16 are “exposed”. Ribosomes with an altered morphology induced by ethionine were compared to normal ribosomes. Proteins S3, S19, S20, S26, L7, L8, L28, L34 and L35 are apparently involved in the conformational change. One or more of these proteins may be involved in the initiation steps of protein synthesis.
