Abstract

Screen printed-carbon electrodes (SPCE) represent a new kind of research tool for electroanalysis due to versatility like fast, simple, disposable and user-friendly nature. The doctoral research emphasized on modification of SPCE by different methods as well as their morphological aspects and applications. Electrochemical activation and oxygen plasma exposition of SPCE revealed the roles of oxygen functionalities and edge-plane sites. Surface bound carbon-oxygen functional groups and generation of edge-plane sites through surface reorientation makes the electrode more electroactive towards NADH, ascorbic acid, dopamine and uric acid. Study of Nafion mixed metal oxide composite-SPCE depicted the structural morphology and catalytic performance towards biologically important thiol (cysteine), disulfide (cystine) and drug analysis of terbutaline. The last phase of doctoral research focused on voltammetric studies and the availability of an on-line single use disposable sensor by shewanella sp. modified SPCE. In brief, the application of electrochemical techniques for developing disposable chemical and bio-sensors is carried out successfully. Most important outcome from the present work is, the activated SPCE shows edge-plane functional group properties, having advantage in simple and fast analysis of various biological /environmental compounds of significance.
