Abstract

A phase separator for flow injection (FI) volatile compounds generation combined with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) was developed. The separator was constructed using a glass tube with a minimal dead volume respect to the classical U-tube separator. A peristaltic pump was used to aspirate the drained liquid and control the filling level, improving the reproducibility of the measurements and avoiding turbulence in the ICP. This device is simple and easy to fit to any FI system. The proposed separator was used for the determination of mercury.
