Abstract
Unbounded increase in fault current magnitude is becoming an alarming issue in the power system because of the installation of inverter based distributed generation (IBDG) at a large number in recent years. For overcoming this problem a modified bridge type fault current limiter (MBFCL) has been proposed. The MBFCL is fed in the AC side of the IBDG system and for controlling the reactance of the MBFCL properly, a specified controller has been implemented. Non-linear voltage at common coupling (Vpcc) based control mechanism is used to control the MBFCL operation. The DC link voltage control and the power interchange between AC and DC side of IBDG is done by outer controller loop and inner current controller of the main controller respectively. To investigate the superiority of the proposed system we have applied balanced and unbalanced faults in the system. The simulation is carried out in MARLAB/SIMULINK. Finally, the fault current limiting performance is compared with series dynamic braking resistor (SDBR) and BFCL and it is found that proposed MBFCL performs better.
