Abstract

This article challenges the widelyheld belief that the radical differences between James's early and late styles result from his change in mode of composition from handwriting to dictation in 1897 while writing What Maisie Knew . Computational methods show that James's style develops gradually over his whole career rather than changing abruptly after 1897. Along with traditional evidence about the composition of Maisie, they also show that methods that are very effective in identifying even subtle stylistic variations show no significant stylistic changes within Maisie that can be reasonably linked with the process of dictation.
