MODERN PROBLEMS OF DEVELOPMENT OF ARMENIAN SCIENTIFIC-TECHNIAL TERMINOLOGY AND LEXICOGRAPHY

Abstract

In the context of development of Armenian general terminology, the origin of scientific-technical terminology and the peculiarities and phases of lexicography are considered. It is shown that Armenian scientific-technical terminology has passed two main stages. In the first stage, in the cause of term creation, translation, lexicography, as well as the establishment of the regularities of term creation, the contribution of the two Mechitarist Congregations has been enormous. The Mechitarists have not only compiled dictionaries, but also used works on Natural Science and those of technical character as textbooks, putting the Armenian terms into circulation. In the second stage, in the Soviet times and at present, in the cause of development of scientific and technical terminology, the role of Yerevan Polytechnic Institute (National Polytechnic University of Armenia, at present) has been decisive. By the demand of the extending list of specialties, the scientific-technical academic methodical of literature in Armenian is the fundament on which various spheres of the Armenian scientific and technical terminological systems are based and developed. Their circulation has favoured not only the education of engineers in Armenian, but also the development of the scientific and technical substyle in Armenian. As a result of considering different dictionaries, particularly the “Russian-Armenian Polytechnic Dictionary” (1988), according to the present requirements set to the lexicography of scientific and technical terminology, the lexicographical peculiarities and deviations of the Armenian terms have been revealed, and based on the regularities of development of terms, their peculiarities have been analyzed. Proposals on the necessity of regulating the scientific and technical terminology and dictionaries, particularly, improving the mentioned Polytechnic dictionary have been made.
