Abstract

The calculated ambiguity of the initial phrase of the title facilitated the inclusion of a substantial range of topics in one day of conference. More than two hundred school teachers, with a scattering of administrators, inspectors, university teachers and industrial physicists, attended and enjoyed the meeting, which had by courtesy of the authorities of the Royal Scottish Museum been transferred at rather short notice to the large and comfortable lecture hall of the museum. The attendance was much larger than was at first expected, and a good deal too large for effective discussion, so that most people seemed to feel in the end that the meeting had been stimulating but inconclusive.
