Abstract

The huge volume of data available from a radar survey, with thicknesses measured at least every 300 mm along the carriageway allows easy comparisons to be made between the thickness of individual layers and the measured deflection: good correlation is frequently found between changes in thickness or materials in individual layers measured by pulsed radar and changes in the deflections measured by deflectograph. The author presents a clear example of how the combination of pulsed radar, surface observation, deflection and coring can arrive at a correct analysis of a pavement's performance, with minimal disruption to traffic.
