Abstract

A new model describing the relaxation dynamics of nematic liquid crystals in porous hosts is presented. The model predicts a bifurcation from a single high-temperature relaxation to a bimodal low-temperature process. The bimodal relaxation shows a cross-over from a short-time Debye type relaxation to an approximately stretched exponential one. The model gives a good account of the experimental results.
