Abstract

With increase of power transmission demands, requirement of parallel erection of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) and High Voltage Alternating Current (HVAC) lines has received a boost in past few decades across several countries. The close proximity operation or hybrid operation of HVAC and HVDC transmission lines are also advantageous where availability of right of way is a main concern for transmission corridors. But with advent of this corridors, there associated effects has also became a major area for research work. The paper focuses on calculation of hybrid electric field in parallel erection of HVAC and HVDC transmission lines, which is often called as close proximity operation. Computation of hybrid electric field for this kind of lines is necessary so as to meet up the criteria's of engineering design and environmental protection issues. In this work, COMSOL Multiphysics has been used for the computation of the hybrid electric field distribution of HVAC and HVDC transmission lines under close proximity operation. For validation of the results, comparison has been made with the existing analytical methods as obtained from an extensive literature survey. The study has been further extended to obtain the distribution of electric field of hybrid transmission corridor at different levels from ground.
