Abstract

The effect of simultaneous heat and mass transfer on the rate of a heterogeneous catalytic reaction has been studied in the case where the reaction rate may be regarded as concentration independent. Approximate analytic solutions of transport equations for catalyst particles of slab or cylindrical shape and a semianalytic method of solution for spherical particles are presented. On the basis of a comparison of approximate and correct values of the effectiveness factor it is shown, that the given relations can be used for the calculation of this variable with a relative error less than 5 per cent on the average. In the case of a catalyst particle of slab or cylindrical shape there can exist three stationary solutions of transport equations; in the case of a spherical catalyst particle more (for example five) such solutions are possible.
