Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to present a Crash Avoidance Systems (CAS) effectiveness modeling framework, based on concepts from reliability theory, that may complement kinematic, dynamic, and epidemiological methods for estimating CAS effectiveness. A sensitivity analysis is then reported that determined the impact of various model parameters and assumptions on effectiveness as the parameters vary. The paper concludes with a discussion of limitations and data needs associated with this modeling approach.
