Abstract
It is shown that a small slope in the core index profile of a two-mode optical fiber causes the LP01 and LP11 modes to experience different shifts from the geometrical center of the fiber. This effect increases by orders of magnitude the bend sensitivity of two-mode fiber modal interferometers, allowing for interesting sensing applications. Experimental evidence endorses the results obtained from perturbation analyses. Optimization of the index profile to increase bend sensitivity is also discussed.
