Abstract

This article proposes the utilization of stochastic differential equations to model short-term fluctuations of tidal currents. Two relevant environmental scenarios are considered, namely, with and without waves. As opposed to the models currently available in the literature, the proposed models are based on measurement data and are shown to capture the statistical properties, i.e. the autocorrelation and the probability distribution, of such data for both scenarios. The proposed models can be readily incorporated in tidal turbine models for short-term stability analysis of power systems.
