Abstract
Wind turbines with higher power ratings are desired to reduce construction cost and maintenance time and increase energy yields. Three-phase induction generators are widely used in renewable power generation. Self-excited, squirrel cage induction generators are ideally suited for remote, standalone applications of low and medium power generation. The emerging multiphase induction generator (MPIG) with phases more than three is receiving significant attention for high power applications. This paper aspires at the performance investigation of five-phase induction generator (FPIG) in self-excited mode for standalone wind applications. The dynamic model of FPIG is developed using Matlab/Simulink. The performance of wind-driven FPIG under different operating conditions has been analyzed. The process of voltage build-up, current and torque under no load and loaded conditions are presented. The results are compared with three-phase self-excited induction generator (SEIG) to show the effectiveness of FPIG for high-power wind generation.
