Abstract

This paper presents a simplified yet comprehensive model of a basic energy storage system for analysing the transient stability of a multi machine system. Primarily, this paper attempts at giving a generalized model by imbibing a defined set of differential algebraic equations (DAEs). The energy storage device is incorporated in a WSCC 9-bus system as an additional source which injects current at its specific bus, and also as an energy sink if need be so, thereby allowing a sufficiently flexible control over real as well as reactive power in the system. It is illustrated in dynamic simulations as a constantly controllable real and reactive power source. The mathematical modeling of energy storage system is followed by its incorporation in a power system. The model provides important insights into the structural details of adding an energy storage system to stabilize power transient swings.
