Abstract

This paper represents an attempt to explore the meaning of the term communicative competence in a foreign language and its main components, as well as the importance of its achievement. It starts with different definitions and models of communicative competence, showing how this term came about and how it became the main goal of teaching and learning English as a foreign or second language in many countries. The paper also recommends some activities, which can be of great importance when it comes to mastering English and acquiring communicative competence, when applying a communicative approach in teaching a foreign language.
