Abstract
A peak located 2 eV below the Fermi energy, seen in the field-emitted current density from W(100) covered with either CO or O, is associated with a peak in the density of states of the substrate. A simple model is proposed whereby structures in the density of states of the substrate may be reflected in the local density of states of the adsorb ate. The consequences of the model for the total energy distribution in field emission from adsorb ate-covered W(100) are investigated and compared with experiments.
