Abstract

This article analyzes the MDST as a method for determining KIIc, in function of the confining pressure, of homogeneous rock and concrete and proposes a simple way for KIIc envelope determination. The study was carried out by numerical analysis and the main conclusions are as follows: i) MDST is suitable for KIIc determination, since mode II prevails in the test; ii) horizontal fracture is due to shear; iii) the confining pressure must be determined at the fracture tip (σn (tip)); iv) two equations were proposed for determining KIIc in function of σn (tip); v) KIIc envelopes were obtained for some rocks and concrete; and vi) KIIc for σn (tip) equal to zero probably does not exist.
