Abstract

Using the power flow equation, the state of mode coupling in plastic-clad silica fiber and organic glass-clad PMMA fiber is investigated in this article. Coupling coefficients are determined by extending our previously reported calculation method to the narrowing beams that are launched with distributions wider than the corresponding steady state distributions. It was found that the organic glass-clad PMMA fiber showed stronger mode coupling than the plastic-clad silica fiber. Consequently, the fiber length for achieving the steady state distribution was shorter for organic glass-clad PMMA fibers than for plastic-clad silica fibers.
