Abstract

The present paper intends to investigate a c ertain f orm o f e xpansion o f g reat contemporary cities which is related to new forms of mobility as much of workers and consumers, as of goods and supplied services. Our hypothesis is that the increase in mobility, the consequent sprawl of the urban fabric over long distances and the appearance of the so-called perimetropolitan areas cannot be understood as a mere extrapolation of those dynamics and forms of urban expansion that led to the formation of the modern metropolises. It is intended, here, to indicate approaches of investigations which might be capable of verifying if there are, in these perimetropolitan areas, possible ruptures with the traditional metropolitan logic. Placed in a world context, the debate presented in our paper focuses on the Latin-American metropolis, in general, and on the Brazilian one in particular.
