Abstract
The behavior of several supercritical alkanes was investigated with respect to solute diffusion and mobile-phase mass transfer under a variety of chromatographic conditions. The chromatographic band-broadening method was applied to study diffusion phenomena in uncoated fused-silica tubes using polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as model compounds. Possible measurement interferences are discussed. Measured values for the diffusion coefficient (D/sub M/) ranged from 1.0 X 10/sup -4/ to 3.3 X 10/sup -4/ cm/sup 2//s with an estimated precision of 5%. It is observed that D/sub M/ decreased with increasing mobile-phase density. At constant density and temperature, there was no systematic change in D/sub M/ for the C/sub 3-5/ alkanes.
