Abstract

software with mobile-cloud integration is no longer a necessity but a need in modern day's technology trends. Industrial automation domain has been rather conservative towards adopting new technology changes. However efforts are being made to connect industrial automation software with mobile and cloud. An established protocol namely OPC UA is being experimented for this purpose. OPC UA is a leading industrial M2M communication protocol. It enables interoperable data exchange between applications from different vendors across different hardware platforms and operating systems. A systematic attempt to adopt the protocol to handheld devices like mobile phones, tablets and cloud platforms opens up new possibilities in the industrial automation domain. This forms the first step towards IOT integration with industrial devices. The opportunities here are not limited to controlling the plants, visualizing the data through smart devices. Additionally cloud platforms facilitate acquisition and processing of industrial data. The cloud's infrastructure capabilities can also help seamless communication with OPC UA conformant devices and applications across different geographies. This paper explains a use case of successful mobile-cloud integration with HMI panels. It also captures statistics on different behavioral characteristics observed post integration with mobile and cloud.
